One-Stop Shopping
Described by Matt McGrath

In this article, McPhee once again describes in great detail something that I essentially had no knowledge about—lacrosse. Being Canadian, and an avid sports fan, one would think that I would at least have some hidden information about the game, however they would be greatly mistaken. McPhee obviously loves this game, and in “One-Stop Shopping” it is very evident.

He starts on this piece describing many high schools that are eligible to make it into quality universities. These high school all stars are then invited to a type of tournament in which they can broadcast their abilities to university and college scouts for their next year. The “shopping” aspect of this article is referring to how coaches relate to the players they are watching by writing down literally everything they observe.

“Coach 7 to Coach 8: He has pretty good skills, but he needs serious work in the weight room.”

When McPhee relays the coaches short and abbreviated language into the text, I was generally confused and really had to use my head to piece everything together. Throughout the piece, McPhee also interrupts by coming back to what seems to be rough notes that were scribbled down by a coach.

“Good size athletic wants RH no finish
good cutter
athletic tough physical covers ground”

McPhee also made me aware of how the game of Lacrosse is becoming more and more popular. Even if McPhee was trying not to be an activist, this article seemed to scream that he was—and was affective for me in a sense.
